The Lawson Trio was formed in Cambridge in 2000 by three leading members of the University Instrumental Award scheme.   Subsequently the ensemble studied at the Royal Academy of Music where they were awarded a Junior Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellowship from 2005-6.   The trio now pursues a busy concert schedule and has performed in masterclasses with the Endellion, Chilingirian and Fitzwilliam Quartets, Trio Ondine, Valentin Berlinsky, Sigmund Nissel, Ian Brown, William Howard, Philip Fowke and Douglas Boyd.

From 2006-7 the group was coached by the Florestan Trio at the Britten Pears Young Artists' Programme, Aldeburgh, and also in London.   The trio has performed at prestigious venues and festivals including the Purcell Room, St. James' Piccadilly, Chester Summer Festival, the Lake District Summer Music Festival, King's College Easter Festival, Queen's University Belfast, and abroad at the Broadcasting House of the Bayerische Rundfunk in Munich, and the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Finland.

The Lawson Trio has been headhunted by the Schubert Ensemble to work alongside them on their Chamber Music 2000 project (please visit www.chambermusic2000.com for more information). In 2006 they coached student groups at the Yehudi Menuhin School, and since then have regularly been organising their own series of workshops in state schools around London, culminating in concerts at Steinway Halls and the South Bank Centre.

Future plans include performances of a new commission by David Knotts, a project at Queen's University involving premieres of unpublished works by Hamilton Harty and postgraduate composers, the development of a programme of contemporary Russian music, and a gala concert celebrating Chamber Music 2000's tenth birthday with new commissions performed by the Lawson Trio and students involved in the workshops, to take place in a top London venue.
