Goldschmidt
and Zemlinsky, both Jewish composers, were forced to flee Germany
with the rise of the Nazi regime. Panufnik composed under a pseudnym
during
the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, and all his scores were destroyed
in 1944. Shostakovich's bleak trio no 2, employing much Jewish
melody, is often interpreted as an expression of grief at the treatment
of Jews
by Stalin or Hitler. Messiaen composed his epic quartet whilst
a prisoner-of-war in Germany.
