Rebecca Knight - 'Cello

Rebecca has been a member of the Lawson Trio since 2007. Born a Londoner, she was brought up in the West Sussex downs, where she developed a love of the sea, the cello, and (somehow) Slavic languages...

As a musician, she is please to have had the opportunity to glean as much musical knowledge and inspiration from people and places including:

Louise Hopkins (cello @ Guildhall School of Music and Drama), Robert Max (cello @ the Junior Academy), IMS Prussia Cove and Gabor Takacs, the Florestan Trio, David Dolan (classical improvisation), Colin Carr and Simon Rowland Jones (@ Britten Pears residency), David Waterman (cello and chamber music @ chamber studio and everywhere!) and Sviatoslav Richter (on recordings...)

Persevering with being a Londoner, now in the role of a free-lance cellist, Rebecca can most often be found playing with City of London Sinfonia and London Chamber Orchestra. She also freelances with orchestras including RPO and Academy of St Martin in the Fields. She has also ventured further afield to guest lead cello sections of the Ulster Orchestra and Wexford Festival Opera. In chamber music endeavours without the Lawson Trio, she has performed with Endymion ensemble, Presteigne Festival Soloists, Endellion Festival ensembles and the Berkeley Ensemble.

Rebecca was a chamber music professor at the Junior Guildhall from 2005 - 2017, and is still a deputy teacher at Yehudi Menuhin School, and cello teacher at City of London Girls since 2017. She also leads and performs in workshops run by Wigmore Learning, and City of London Sinfonia and the LSO's outreach programmes.

As a distraction, Rebecca enjoys learning Russian and other Slavic languages and has studied with teachers from the Institute of Culture and Art in St Petersburg and at the School of Slavonic and Eastern European Language at UCL. She is currently trying to learn Turkish...
