Lawson Trio
"An extremely musical ensemble....truly excellent players...showing a commitment to chamber music at the highest level." (Martin Lovett, Amadeus Quartet)
Emerging as one of the finest ensembles of its generation, the Lawson Trio enjoys a busy concert schedule, bringing a wide range of traditional and contemporary Piano Trio music to audiences of all ages. Recent British venues have included the South Bank Centre, Bath International Festival, the Lake District Sumer Music Festival, Queen's University Belfast and Manchester University, while performances abroad have taken them to Germany, Austria and Finland.
Chosen by Concordia Foundation as 2010 Young Artists, the trio has also been selected by Making Music for inclusion in its Concert Promoters' Network 2011/12 Guide, resulting in numerous, prestigious music society bookings for 2011-12. In this same season they will also participate in Music in the Round’s nationwide tour, having been invited by Music in the Round on the recommendation of ChamberStudio at King’s Place. The trio is also pleased to be hosting and performing its own mini-recital series in 2011/12, both at the Red Hedgehog in Highgate and at St Anne’s Church, Gresham Street. In July 2011 the trio will travel to Australia as one of only 8 piano trios selected from international auditions to take part in the final rounds of the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, to be broadcast live on ABC Classic FM. The first piano trio to be invited by Aldeburgh Music to take part in one of their String Quartet Residencies, the trio spent the last two weeks of January 2011 working with Colin Carr, Hugh Maguire and Simon Rowland Jones on works by Schubert, Rawsthorne, Ives and Ravel.
The Trio's commitment to encouraging younger musicians and audiences has led to performances for the Florestan Trio's Peasmarsh Festival, regular workshops with performers and composers at Queen's University, Belfast, and an exciting collaboration with the Schubert Ensemble, working as Associate Ensemble on their 'Chamber Music 2000' project. To this end, the Lawson Trio has given masterclasses and workshops in many schools across the UK. In 2010 the Trio was invited to organise, host and perform in a Gala Concert celebrating ten years of Chamber Music 2000 at the Purcell Room. Performing alongside the Lawson Trio were the Schubert Ensemble and groups of young musicians (drawn from primary and secondary schools, and specialist music institutes) coached by the Trio. In association with this event, the Lawson Trio commissioned ten new pieces (composers included Anthony Powers, Paul Patterson, Piers Hellawell and Cheryl Frances Hoad), and gave the world premiere of their own commission by David Knotts.
In addition to their formal studies as Junior Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellows at the Royal Academy of Music, the Lawson Trio has performed in masterclasses with artists including the Endellion, Chilingirian and Fitzwilliam Quartets, and Sigmund Nissel. The group has received extensive coaching from the Florestan Trio at the Britten Pears School, Aldeburgh and also in London, and benefits from regular sessions with Martin Lovett, Susan Tomes, Simon Rowland Jones and David Waterman, as well as public masterclasses with internationally renowned chamber musicians at ChamberStudio, Kings Place
The trio is active in the field of contemporary music, recently commissioning a trio from David Knotts as well as a double piano trio, inspired by the 2012 Olympics, from Cheryl Frances Hoad. In the past year, composers including Anthony Powers, Camden Reeves and Gordon Crosse have written works for the ensemble and a number of these will be recorded at Manchester University in September 2011, for ASC Records. The Trio's schedule for 2010/11 includes performances at the South Bank Centre in London and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, as well as numerous music society concerts across the UK and workshops in institutions such as Chetham’s School of Music, the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music.
The Lawson Trio would like to thank Philip Carne and the Richard Carne Trust for their generous support.
